BETHLEHEM

Pour la première fois, la production « Bethlehem » de Wonder Cabinet sera présentée en France, avec un spectacle à Paris le 16 mai et un autre à Lyon dans le cadre du festival Nuits Sonores le 17 mai.

Fruit d’une collaboration entre Wonder Cabinet, le chef de chœur de Bethléem Lawrence Sammour et les musiciens beyrouthins Sary Moussa et Abed Kobeissy, cette œuvre électroacoustique tisse un lien entre la tradition liturgique sacrée et la création électronique expérimentale.

Commandée pour Noël 2023, à un moment où Bethléem avait annulé toutes les célébrations en réponse au génocide en Palestine, la pièce a été diffusée sur plus de cinquante stations de radio à travers le monde. Après sa première en direct au festival Le Guess Who?, le projet s’enrichit désormais de la participation de Makram Aboul Hosn, en vue d’un album et d’un livre qui sortiront en 2026.

La soirée débutera avec une première partie de Charbel Haber, musicien, interprète, artiste visuel et compositeur libanais originaire de Beyrouth. 
Outre ses œuvres ambiantes en solo (publiées chez Discrepant, Scum Yr Earth, Al Maslakh), il a fondé le groupe post-punk Scrambled Eggs et est cofondateur de deux labels expérimentaux (Those Kids Must Choke, Johnny Kafta’s Kids Menu). Haber a collaboré avec des artistes de renom dans les domaines du free rock et de l’improvisation (Michael Zerang, Mats Gustafson) et fait partie de plusieurs ensembles musicaux (Malayeen, Omarchestra). Son dernier opus est un album complet intitulé « May a soft sun bless your sky while you wait for the inevitable ».

For the first time, the Wonder Cabinet production Bethlehem will be in France with a performance in Paris on May 16th and another in Lyon as part of Nuits Sonores Festival on May 17th. 

The result of a collaboration created by Wonder Cabinet with Bethlehem choirmaster Lawrence Sammour, and Beirut-based musicians Sary Moussa and Abed Kobeissy, this electro-acoustic work weaves a link between sacred liturgical tradition and experimental electronic creation. 

Commissioned for Christmas 2023, at a moment when Bethlehem had cancelled all celebrations in response to the genocide in Palestine, the piece was broadcast on more than fifty radio stations around the world. 

Following its live premiere at the Le Guess Who? festival, the project now expands with the participation of Makram Aboul Hosn, in view of an album and a book to be released in 2026.

The show will open with a first act by Charbel Haber, a Lebanese musician, performer, visual artist and composer from Beirut. In addition to his solo ambient works (released on Discrepant, Scum Yr Earth, Al Maslakh), he founded the post-punk group Scrambled Eggs and is the co-founder of two experimental record labels (Those Kids Must Choke, Johnny Kafta’s Kids Menu).

Haber has collaborated with notable free rock and improv artists (Michael Zerang, Mats Gustafson) and is a member of multiple music ensembles (Malayeen, Omarchestra). His latest work is a full length album, entitled ‘May a soft sun bless your sky while you wait for the inevitable’.
